What is POE Elastomer?

Polyolefin elastomer (POE) is a kind of thermoplastic elastomer with narrow relative molecular mass distribution and uniform short chain branch distribution, which is catalyzed by DOW Chemical Company in the United States. In a broad sense, POE refers to polyolefin elastomers such as ethylene-octene copolymer, ethylene-butene copolymer, ethylene-hexene copolymer, etc., and is generally produced by metallocene catalysis. POE in a narrow sense means an ethylene-octene copolymer. The main properties of this elastomer are very prominent, and the performance indicators in many aspects exceed those of ordinary elastomers. The ethylene-octene copolymer elastomer is mainly discussed here.

The molecular structure of POE is similar to that of EPDM, so POE also has excellent properties such as aging resistance, ozone resistance and chemical resistance. By crosslinking POE, the heat resistance temperature of the material is improved, the permanent deformation is reduced, and the main mechanical properties such as tensile strength and tear strength are greatly improved. Multi-purpose POE elastomers can exceed PVC, EVAC, SBR, EMA and EPDM, and POE may replace traditional EPDM in the future. Because of the superiority of POE, it has been widely used in the automotive industry, wire and cable sheath, plastic toughening agent and so on.

What are the characteristics of POE?

The basic characteristics of POE elastomer are high octene mass fraction (less than 20% is plastomer, more than 20% is elastomer, generally refers to the latter), low density, very narrow relative molecular weight, and certain crystallinity. Crystalline PE in its structure exists in the side chain of amorphous comonomer, crystalline PE chain link serves as physical crosslinking to bear load, and non-crystalline ethylene and octene long chains provide elasticity. Its specific properties are as follows:(1) Excellent low-temperature impact resistance. (2) low specific gravity, clean. (3) Outstanding heat sealing performance. (4) Excellent compatibility with various base polymers. (5) Excellent flexibility and puncture resistance. (6) high inorganic filling. (7) superior elongation and high elasticity. (8) Good light transmittance. (9) Excellent electrical insulation performance.

In what ways is POE used?

PP modified PP notched impact strength is low, low temperature brittleness is particularly prominent, so its application is limited, by blending with elastomer POE to improve the impact properties of PP is the most widely used method. The modified and toughened PP can be applied to car bumpers, car door panels, home appliance shells, office stationery, plastic parts for battery cars and motorcycles, and PP jelly cups. POE as PP impact modifier has obvious advantages compared with the traditional EPDM: the mixing process is simpler; mixing dispersion more fully; toughening while maintaining the higher yield strength and fluidity of PP.

Improving the performance of PP/PE recycled materials PP/PE recycled materials will become very brittle due to degradation or crosslinking after processing and cannot be added or used directly in large quantities. Adding POE blending granulation or direct injection molding will greatly improve the performance of PP/PE recycled materials and can be applied to plastic pallets, plastic turnover boxes, plastic toolboxes, plastic desk chair accessories, beach chairs, etc.

PA nylon and other engineering plastics are toughened. Although the non-polarity of compatibilizer POE makes it not compatible with PA, PET and other engineering plastics, POE can smoothly and effectively undergo graft reaction with maleic anhydride (MAH), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), acrylic acid AA and other monomers through peroxide initiation. The obtained graft is widely used to toughen PA and other engineering plastics, and can also be used as compatibilizer in plastic alloys.

The flexibility and resilience of foaming POE with EVAC are much higher than those of EVAC, and foaming will have better results, such as lighter weight of foamed products, better compression rebound, good touch, uniform and fine cells, high tear strength and other outstanding advantages. Whether it is molded foaming or injection foaming after granulation, POE has been widely used in foaming products such as beach shoes, slippers, sneaker midsoles, mouse pads, seat cushions, styrofoam materials, thermal insulation materials, cushioning sheets, luggage linings, etc.

EVAC extrusion hose modified with POE in the hose industry, especially extrusion winding bellows, EVAC and POE mixed use of the product is more flexible, better resistance to bending, better resistance to environmental stress. Added to the inner layer of the extruded hose, the hose has a stain-resistant seal, the required heat seal temperature is low and the heat seal strength is higher. Widely used in vacuum cleaner hose, washing machine hose, drain pipe.

The extremely low crystallinity of color masterbatch or filling masterbatch POE makes it have good inclusiveness and excellent fluidity for filling. POE can be used as carrier in color masterbatch or filling masterbatch or replace PE wax to improve the quality of color masterbatch or filling masterbatch.

Hot melt adhesive POE can replace EVAC to produce high-grade hot melt adhesive, and the product can be odorless, low density, high flow coating, good wettability, etc., and can also be used with EVAC.

Cable material POE has excellent electrical insulation, ozone resistance, fire resistance, weather resistance, aging resistance and other characteristics. It has high crosslinking efficiency and can replace EVAC, EEA or EPDM for non-PVC cable sheath insulation. In addition, POE can replace EVAC or use it with EVAC to produce halogen-free flame retardant cable materials with low change rate of hardness and strength.

Film products, such as PE film, are based on POE/LLDPE/CPP blending. POE has excellent low-temperature heat sealing performance, hot adhesive strength and rebound performance, I .e. widening the heat sealing window temperature of the heat sealing layer brings good improvement to the rebound and tear resistance of the film itself.
